Frequently Asked Questions

Dog Under Blanket
  • Where do you get your animals?

WAGS has had animals come from all sorts of situations. It can be a local shelter who has picked up a stray or an animal that has been surrendered. It can be an abandoned animal or family that is in need. We get calls when animals are in unsafe situations, for instance when a litter is being given away for free through social media. We have had animals come to us because the owner has passed away or entered a nursing home, because the animal is at risk of euthanasia in an overcrowded shelter, because an animal has extensive medical needs and no one to pay, or because a breeder has gone out of business and wishes to relinquish remaining animals.

  • What is the process to adopt an animal?

Adoption begins by filling out our adoption application. Following a phone interview, reference checks and a home visit, an adoption contract is signed. The adoption process is outlined in detail on the "Get Involved" page of our website.

  • How long does the application process take?

We want our fur friends to be placed in their loving forever homes as quickly as possible. That being said, we need to ensure the application is complete, references are thorough, and a home visit has been completed. We are an all volunteer group who also work full time jobs, so we proceed as quickly as we can while maintaining integrity in our process.

  • What is the adoption fee?

The adoption fee varies depending on the animal and the costs incurred to date. Generally they start at $300. Pups and kittens receive all their initial vaccines while older animals are spayed and neutered.

  • Can we visit your shelter?

Unfortunately, no. WAGS does not have a facility. We are foster based which means WAGS animals are living with foster families until they are placed in their adoptive homes. There may be times when they are in a local shelter or in a board and train facility. In those situations, visits may be arranged if there is a particular adoption interest.

  • Do you adopt out emotional support animals?

Emotional support animals are determined by the individual adopter’s mental health provider, and are different from service animals WAGS does not currently have the resources to provide service animals.
